Young Adult Group Therapy
Group therapy for young adults focuses on personal issues and major life stressors of individuals aged 17 to 22. Specific issues that might be addressed include separation and transition, intimacy, work and career, identity, recent and remote trauma.
Group therapy brings together five to ten young adults who become “therapeutic helpers” and learning partners for one another. In a supportive, private and confidential setting, group therapy provides opportunities to:
- Work through specific problems and life challenges
- Understand one’s own patterns of thoughts and behaviors
- Perceive and experience group members’ reactions to one another
- Participate in meaningful discussions
- Minimize feelings of isolation
- Learn with and from other people
- Change and grow
The therapeutic benefits of group therapy increase with greater involvement in the group. Therefore, consistent attendance is expected of group therapy patients. Each member of a therapy group is also expected to express problems, feelings, ideas and reactions as freely and honestly as possible, and to maintain the confidentiality of the group. Groups meet weekly for 75 to 90 minutes.
Young Adult Individual Therapy
When clinically appropriate, young adults are seen individually to provide greater focus on specific issues. They may stay in individual therapy or be transitioned into group therapy. |
